The Roland HPD-15Electronic Drum has been my weapon of choice for years now.. When I first bought this fantastic instrument I leaned towards playing and practicing technique on the "hand drum" type patches, conga, tabla, udu drum, etc...and did not focus on the drum kit patches because I wasn't playing the unit with sticks. However as time went on I discovered the huge potential that this instrument holds and it opened my eyes to some interesting things that can be done when applying "hand drum" techniques to a "drum kit" and vice versa. So now when I gig with CLICK TO ENTER PAPA HOODOO.COM I can back up on Congas, cut loose on Percussion, trance out on Tabla, groove with a Udu Drum or keep a pocket with a variety of kick ass Kits! To check out the HPD-15 for yourself go to HPD-15 DEMO and have some fun!

My "Professor's Paradise" page will feature MP3's from live PH shows as well as other recordings that highlight the endless possibilities of this wonderful toy.

DrumKat 3.0

Part of my studio. Click to enlarge. For ten years I've been practicing, experimenting and discovering different ways

to improvize and "compose" on a DrumKAT Midi Controller.

By "composing", I mean improvizing while attempting to form some structure

or arrangement as a piece progresses to create the aural illusion of a

"Spontaneous Composition".

Playing the Udu Drum. Pic treatment by James R. Walck.

I generally aim to play as many "instruments" as possible while

recording to a PC sequencer. Drums, percussion, bass, keyboards and efx

can all be triggered from the DrumKAT in real time since each pad can be

assigned to play a different instrument or timbre within each DrumKAT setup.

I occasionally play/record to groove box's, drum machines, synth arpeggiations and I

will usually add/dub percussion from a Roland HPD15,

and add/dub lead synth, voiceovers, and the occasional guest musician.

Creating music by banging on a rubber pad the size of an attache case or

a drum that resembles a riot shield has some unique possibilities that

present themselves when approached with imagination and enthusiasm for experimentation.

This approach to music making has many highs and lows however it is

always fun!
